Many drawings only specify PTFE (or if USA origin, TFE) as the choice of material. However, it is important to understand what variables may be applied when your supplier is interpreting this. The following points should be considered:

  • Domestic and international standards: there are several standards that have been written to specify the quality of PTFE to be used when manufacturing a product. The commonly used standards are:
    • BS6564 Parts 1 & 2
    • ISO 12086 Parts 1 & 2
    • ISO 13000 Part 1
  • Different grades of PTFE raw material can significantly influence the properties of the finished product or may carry certain approvals such as FDA. There are many grades of PTFE polymer on the market such as Teflon® from DuPont, Hostaflon® from Dyneon and Fluon® from ICI. If you require a particular grade of PTFE to be used, such as, Dyneon TFM1700, please specify this on your drawing.
  • Various trade names are used for specifying materials on engineering drawings. These usually refer to materials manufactured by suppliers of raw materials or semi-finished PTFE products. In most cases we will be able to source these materials directly from the supplier or offer you an alternative.
  • The processing method used to convert PTFE raw material into a semi-finished stock shape will affect the properties of your finished component. You should work with a supplier who has total control over this part of the manufacturing process.
  


There is one other key distinction to be made when considering PTFE as a material. Dyneon® developed a second generation of PTFE called TFM®. This offers different properties to PTFE, in particular - improved weldability, lower permeation, smoother surface finish and higher transparency. We process the full range of TFM® materials and their equivalents.

We can supply you with the exact grade of PTFE polymer you require. Should you also need a certificate confirming that a particular grade has been used, we will supply one.
