PTFE was
discovered in 1938 by Dr Roy Plunkett of DuPont and was later made commercially
available under the well known trade name of Teflon®. Since then other
manufacturers have introduced grades of PTFE and there are now 5 major
established suppliers of PTFE in its raw form:

In recent
years manufacturers in Russia and the Far East have also started production of
raw polymers.
The properties
of raw (virgin) PTFE can be enhanced by blending it with a range of materials
known as fillers to make PTFE Compounds. There is an extensive range of PTFE
Compound products (over 300) on the market.
